Happy new year to all! Every year I would set new year's resolutions and give up on them a few months into the new year; however, I finally understand how to create resolutions that actually work. Explained in great simplicity and simple terms, I loved how Aristotle had described courage in his time saying, "courage is the heart that sustains all other virtues." One of my new year's resolutions that I plan to stick to this year is being more religiously present, and it is a goal that I am passionate about enough to prioritize over others. Another point I found interesting was how many of us tend to simply be reactive to the world around us, however, I love how you urged us to be more present in our daily lives and tasks including the example of "prime time" in the mornings and before going to bed.
I really related to this article! Its so normal now to set new years goals and then drop them soon after. To be honest its something I really struggle with because I find it hard to get into the habit of something. I tend to commit but forget to re-commit. This article has helped me figure out how I should set goals that I would love to achieve as well as still stick to them even if i'm not feeling motivated some days. Hopefully we all achieve our new years resolutions this year!
Although I'm about a week late to this, happy new year to everyone!
I love how these articles are so relatable and explain psychological concepts in a way that isn't difficult to understand. Personally, I always struggle to commit to my new year's resolutions, often completely abandoning them about a week into the new year. But, this year, by pre-committing, committing, and re-committing, I find that this year I may really have a chance in sticking to my resolutions.
Happy New Year Sophie. You’re never too late, including the times when you fail and have to restart your journey towards your goal. What matters is progress. Enjoy the process of getting back up after a set-back 😊
Thank you so much for this amazing and relatable article!!! with every line i read i related more and more. it made me so happy knowing that reaching my goals will take time and commitment, however it is more than okay to fail at some point because "welcome to being human"! one of my goals for this new year would be to become more academically present, meaning strengthening my study habits and focusing on school work. There were many interesting points in this article and one that has come to my attention is the exaggerated usage of mobile phones in the morning and night, which is a habit that needs to be immediately dropped! Thank you for this article!
I see a lot of wisdom in what you plan on tackling and what you want to achieve. Keep going and make sure you always bring kindness towards yourself as you continue to experiment, iterate, and learn! 🙏
i love how relatable this article is!!! Especially the example of using my phone before sleeping and after waking up. its a really bad habit and i really want to quit it. Reading this article made me realize im not the only one who struggles with this and it encourges me to stop it as we enter the new year. Now i can make resolutions that will work and will stick woth me for a while. This article really helps me apply useful things to imrpove my life.
Good luck Sarah, don’t forget to bring self-compassion as you dive into your new journey. I see you’ve already brought one part which is recognizing “you’re not the only one” - that’s common humanity.
This article really shed light on the importance of committing to the things we are passionate about. A simple act such as resisting the urge to check our phones in the morning and use that time for our own sake is already a huge step forward. I would love to learn more about how this works & how i can apply it to my own life.
Best way to apply this is to safeguard your morning and start with asking yourself “what do I want to do today?” and writing that on a paper, before checking-in with your phone.
this article is very eye-opening and will help me achieve my new year’s resolutions! the process of pre-committing, committing, and re-committing sounds very promising. it does take courage to stand by who you are and who you want to be.
Indeed Lamiaa, being present to each of those stages will help you bring kindness and clarity to what’s working and what needs work to effectively correct where needed.
I love how this article discusses the ongoing things that we tend to face everyday. With 2023 starting, I set my New Years resolutions and wrote them down to actually commit to them, but I’m not sure I can do so since I give up on them at some point. Something I want to start doing is reading more often. In the times where I’ve sat down and genuinely read a book, I’ve loved it more than anything. It felt like an escape from reality that took my mind off of all problems and also taught me so much when it comes to education. With this being a New Years resolution, I do believe that I love it enough to prioritize it. Another thing I loved in this article is how it is extremely relatable. It makes the reader feel understood and motivated to start committing to resolutions and goals.
Thank you Nada. My suggestion for your new reading habit is to schedule it at the same time, in the same place, for the same duration, every single day. For it to be every single day it needs to be very small (maybe 1 page?).
Once you got the habit established you can start increasing the duration so you enjoy it more - knowing that doing just one page may not be enough but it serves install the habit first.
I've been guilty with giving up at re-commit, it's very hard to re-commit to things that I don't necessarily enjoy but must get done. I realize now it is completely normal to fail, but to getting right back up to re-commit is something that is crucial for every journey. I guess that'll be my new year's resolution, to always re-commit!
That’s correct Salma, we all tend to forget to recommit because when we fail to meet our commitment we thing all is over. But we all know that’s not true, we can get back up and start again.
Keep in mind, sometimes we do things we do not enjoy yet we value. It is better to measure the currency of doing a task by how much you value it rather than how much you enjoy it. 😊
This post, in my opinion, really removed all the blame for not being able to commit to new interests and explained that temporarily stopping something is acceptable as long as you know what's important to you and prioritize your commitments. Its okay to fall out of track for a little bit as long as you recommit yourself to the things you value.

Happy New Year Zina, excited for you to crush those goals in 2023!

Love the reflection Sara - it is okay to make mistakes (a mis-take, just means to go for another “take” rather than absolute failure)
