If time management isn’t working for you, here’s what you can do instead:
Hello friend! 👋
Since we’re talking about the importance of time, I’ll keep today’s post short.
Time is finite, we all get the same 24 hours a day.
But there is a way to create infinite capacity.
And that’s through ‘energy management’.
Energy management is a prerequisite to, and a higher-level order than, time management alone.
Start with focusing on your energy (which, unlike time, you can also create not just consume), before managing your time.
It’s like the three stages of creating habits:
State. Story. Strategy.
Most people do it wrong (they start the other way around), thinking: “If I skip to strategy, I can get to the outcome quicker.” But it doesn’t end up working for long, and that’s the main reason why many habits fail (maintaining a new diet, for example).
For strategy to work, there needs to be a strong belief first (story), which requires the right mental state (hopeful, optimistic, confident, etc…).
Similarly with time management; it is a strategy.
If you want that to be successful, start with managing your energy.
Ask yourself:
How many activities in my day nourish me? Double down on these.
Which activities in my deplete me? Cut them off.
What is my protocol to get in my best energy every day? Make it non-negotiable.
How much energy (passion) do I put into activities important to me (time with loved ones, working on personal projects, etc…)
This reflection is a simple way to check in and shift the focus from time (which is finite) to energy (which can be infinite).
Once you’ve managed your energy well, you’ll find that time becomes more readily available. You create energy and it creates time.
Do it today to design your most optimal day.
Have a Super Sunday! 💪
With much joy,
Hashim
