Hello friend!
We just concluded week 7 out of the 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program. Many participants realize throughout the program that this isn’t just about stress reduction.
It is about learning life skills.
The homework for the past week was for everyone to track their diet. Not the physical diet, but the information they consume.
We are often flooded with information whether on email, the news, or social media, which can expose us to much stress.
Most without our choice. And this can wreak havoc on our mental well-being.
Developing the skills to be mindful about what we allow into our consciousness (and how much) is key to living authentically.
One that aligns with our values and our goals.
HOWEVER.
It isn’t enough to just have the intention to regulate it.
We need a digital detox.
Our mind needs time away from consumption so that it can have space for creativity.
Last Sunday, we spent a day of practice in a silent retreat (also part of the MBSR program).
It is a way for us to step away from the usual distractions, and binge consumption, to be in each other’s presence. There is something beautiful about relating to one another and ourselves without having to speak a word.
At the end of the retreat, as with the one before it, I was filled with a deep sense of compassion and connection - especially as participants shared their journey in working with the pleasant and unpleasant challenges during the day.
A silent retreat may sound extreme, but I’m reminded of these wise words:
‘Extreme measures, but how else can balance be restored? The pendulum must swing the other way before it can rest in the middle.’ — Karpov Kinrade
If you’re curious about MBSR or silent retreats, I plan to offer a new cohort in May/June. Click here to learn more.
For now, I’ll leave you with this thought:
Pay attention to your consumption on social media and consider the result. Is it what you want?
Let the answer to this question guide your adjustment (if any).
Have fun playing with this idea for this week and have a Super Sunday! ⚡️
With much joy,
Hashim
